“He who dies but does not perish will live long.”Lao Zi · Cartea despre Dao și Virtute · -400 · capitolul 33
You don't perish when you die, but when you leave nothing alive behind you.
Lao Zi separates death as an event from perishing as a loss of meaning. The body stops either way, but someone who leaves something alive behind, an idea, a deed, a way of being, does not vanish with it. The paradox is that real longevity is not counted in years, and the mechanism is plain: what lives on in others keeps acting. A teacher whose name is forgotten but whose rigor shows in former students has died without perishing.
Why it matters It helps anyone living with the anxiety of short time, convinced that only longevity or fame give a life weight.
