Knowing others is wisdom, knowing yourself is enlightenment.Lao Zi · Cartea despre Dao și Virtute · -400 · capitolul 33

Knowing others is wisdom, but knowing yourself is enlightenment.

Lao Zi distinguishes two levels of understanding. Knowing others means grasping human nature, which is useful and wise. But knowing yourself—your motives, limits, emotions—leads to deep awakening, to enlightenment. A leader may read people well, but if unaware of their own weaknesses, they remain blind to their own mistakes.

Why it mattersIn personal development, this thought reminds us that introspection is more valuable than analyzing those around us.
