Every person contains within themselves the whole human condition, with its weaknesses and possibilities.

“Every man bears the whole form of the human condition.”Michel de Montaigne · Eseuri · 1580 · III, 2

What you despise in others lies latent in you, only in a different dose.

Montaigne rejects the idea that there are exemplary people and inferior ones, models and apprentices. Any person, anywhere and anytime, carries the same drives: pride, fear, vanity, courage, desire. Differences are of dose and circumstance, not of nature. That is why judging others is often self-deception: what you despise in a tyrant or a fool exists latently in you. Self-knowledge thus becomes the only real path to understanding the world.

If the whole human condition lives in each of us, then self-knowledge is not a luxury but a practical tool. Montaigne studies himself not out of narcissism, but as a specimen: what he feels, others probably feel too. When you catch yourself half-lying to look good in a meeting with your boss, you have learned something about all people, not just about yourself. Introspection thus becomes research, and humility becomes a method. The next step is to see what we do with this discovery: how it translates into the way we listen and judge.

Why it matters A fitting antidote to today's contempt: before judging someone online, start by recognizing the same impulse in yourself.
