Authority based on fear is more durable than that based on affection.
Machiavelli argues that love is fragile: people withdraw it easily when self-interest shifts. Fear, by contrast, is constant, as long as punishment is credible. For instance, a lenient boss may be betrayed by employees seeking advantage, while a fair but firm one who applies predictable sanctions is respected and avoided being challenged.
