You are free only when you can master yourself.Nicolae Iorga · Cugetări · 1911 · IV. Despre libertate

True freedom is self-mastery, not the absence of constraints.

Iorga reverses the common meaning of freedom: you are not free when you have no constraints, but when you can master your impulses. A person ruled by cravings—food, anger, laziness—is actually their slave. True freedom requires inner discipline. For example, someone who can resist the urge to spend all their money on clothes is freer than a compulsive buyer, because they can choose their own direction.

Why it mattersIn the age of consumerism and social media, this idea helps you distinguish between doing what you want and doing what is good for you.
