Written from prison, after years of public disgrace, the line reverses the value of sorrow: it is not a flaw of character but ground where humility, compassion and clarity are cultivated. The mechanism is inner alchemy: pain, if not denied, forces you to see what is essential and makes you able to understand the pain of others. Someone who has gone through a great loss and accepted it often becomes the gentlest counselor to those in mourning.

If pain is ground for depth, then its story is not something to hush up, but to tell briefly and cleanly, without apologies. Wilde wrote from prison without begging pardon for what he lived through. An example: in a conversation with a new friend, you can simply say you went through a divorce, without presenting it as a stain.
