The last pride to surrender is not for money, but for being seen.
The monk of Deventer writes a manual for the inner life, not for success. His point is that the desire for recognition is the last and hardest form of pride: you can give up money and pleasures, but reputation is difficult to surrender. That is why he asks not merely to endure being overlooked, but to love that state. Example: the colleague who does the essential work, never appears in meetings, and suffers nothing from it.
Kempis is not talking about being ignored by force. He is talking about your inner reaction when it happens. The real test is not whether you endure anonymity, but what you feel at the moment you notice nobody saw you. If you stay calm, you have learned something.
