To live only inwardly, with no aim and no commitment, is a way of being a person without weight.

“To put everything in the soul, nothing on the outside, to pass through life without hurrying, to stop, to not know where you are, to not know where you are going, to have no aim and no purpose, to be carried along by things, this is to be a trifler.”Victor Hugo · Mizerabilii · 1862 · Partea a III-a, cartea I, capitolul I

A soul that commits to nothing outside becomes weightless, a mere trifle.

Hugo describes a sickness of the soul that can look like a virtue at first: sensitivity, a rich inner life. But without action, direction, or a place in the world, that richness becomes a trifle, something light and worthless. The person who lives this way is a useless dreamer. The mechanism is clear: the soul needs resistance, objects and deeds outside itself, in order to take shape.

The card says the soul needs resistance to take shape. The next step is that resistance comes not from suffering, but from chosen commitment. When you pick a target, you willingly accept the weight that comes with it. That turns dreaming into doing. Think of someone who wants to write a novel and finally rents a small desk to write there every morning. That small act, paid for with money and a schedule, ties them to the world. Inner life is not lost then; it gains a place to settle. Hugo shows that a person without a target is not calm but suspended, like a boat without an anchor. And suspension feels comfortable precisely because it demands nothing. The question that follows is simple: how do you know you have already chosen the weight, not just waited for it?

Why it matters The line strikes at a very current temptation: living inside your thoughts and feelings without committing to anything concrete. It warns that inwardness without deed becomes emptiness.
