The boundary between dream and reality, between self and other, is less certain than we assume.

Once Zhuang Zhou dreamt he was a butterfly, fluttering happily about, not knowing that it was Zhuang Zhou.Zhuangzi · Zhuangzi · -300 · capitolul 2

Any consciousness feels complete from inside, even without knowing what it truly is.

Zhuangzi recalls dreaming he was a butterfly and, waking up, no longer knowing whether he is a man who dreamt of a butterfly or a butterfly dreaming of a man. The point is not a literary game but a blow to the certainty of identity: we know the world only through subjective experience, and experience cannot verify its own foundation. The dream shows that any consciousness feels total from the inside, whatever it actually is.

Why it mattersIt cultivates epistemic humility: our certainties about who we are and what is real deserve to be held lightly.
